Raising Funds for Heart Research

Story

I'm taking part in the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2016 and helping to raise much needed funds for charity.

The normal message here says I will be sweating it out over a gruelling course, but I won't be doing that as I would be very silly! As you probably know, I suffered a type A aortic dissection two and a half years ago. I am extremely lucky to be alive. As a result I'm a bit limited in how fast I can run (my heart rate cannot exceed 125) and how far I can run (I am not allowed to go further than 10 km). So this year I'm doing the Bridge Run (9 km)

Speed and distance are not the point however. It was only due to the skill of the cardiac surgeons at Royal Melbourne Hospital that I survived, and so in some small way I would like to feel I am giving something back. I have therefore chosen the Heart Research Institute as my charity to raise funds for.

Once upon a time I would have entered the marathon in the Sydney Running Festival. I'm not too upset about not being able to run that distance. The surgeons said that my excellent fitness was one of the major reasons I survived and have recovered so well. Running 9 km keeping my heart rate under 125 is a good enough challenge in any case! :-)

And wouldn't you know it, September 19 (i.e. the day after the run) is the inaugural Aortic Dissection Awareness Day.

I would be very grateful for any donation you can make - thanks for your support!

Did you know that Heart Disease affects 1 in 6 Australians, and 2 out of 3 families and that 1 Australian dies every 12 minutes from heart disease.  Plus more alarmingly 40% of children under the age of 15 years now show early signs of heart disease.

The aim of The Heart Research Institute (HRI) is to provide medical professionals worldwide, with better resources and a better understanding of the Early Detection, Prevention and Treatment of Heart Disease.

With today¹s worldwide epidemic known as the Metabolic Syndrome, where the combined risk factors together increase your chances of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
