Story

Some terms get used so flippantly that they don't even get a second thought; 'That customer was an absolute psycho!' or 'She's such a schizo!'

The basis of those terms is in conditions that can make some people's day-to-day really rough. The day-to-day I'm talking about is not just experiencing the condition itself but the judgement that comes from others who haven't the faintest idea what it's like to hear voices no one else can hear, to see things that others can't or to have extreme mood fluctuations that can damage relationships.

Since I've been working for the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW (SFNSW - don't let the name fool you, we work with people with all mental illnesses), I've seen first-hand the massive difference our programs make in the lives of those with mental illness, their carers and their loved ones. All programs run by SFNSW take a holistic view of the person's health and are focused on a recovery outcome.

A critical part of mental health is physical health so I'm aiming to raise $1000 to fund a person living with mental illness to go to a five day sports camp. At the camp participants are coached in different sports, they learn about nutrition and learn the skills they need to manage their physical health as they make their way towards recovery. Participants also develop their social networks which is another important aspect of leading a fulfilling life.

I'm so very proud to be a part of an organisation is truly changing lives.

P.S. Top tip, don't use those terms, kay?

One Door Mental Health

For 25 years the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW has been working to improve the lives of people living with mental illness, their relatives and carers, and professionals working in the area. Through a range of programs — including respite services, mentoring, supported accommodation, employment help, a telephone support line, health and wellbeing programs and support and training for carers and families — the Fellowship works towards a society in which people with mental illness are valued and treated as equals. It advocates on behalf of people with mental illness, their relatives and mental health professionals for better government policy, and raises community understanding and support in order to eliminate the stigma around mental illnesses, and encourage people living with these conditions to seek help early.
