There's No Running From Mental Illness, So I'm Running For Mental Health

Story

I first tried running at some point in 2nd year of psych undergrad under the realisation that I was working towards a profession that often asks people to face incredible challenges for the purpose of a better quality of life. I felt like I needed to (in whatever small way) earn the conscience to ask this commitment through facing my own challenging betterment. Running seemed like the perfect example. I musn't have done more than 1km when I got home feeling sick and adverse to any intention to try that again. And I didn't... Until the end of 4th year where my passion for psychology had grown my sense of discipline and determination... I went out, managed maybe 3km and despite the early protests of my body stuck with it.

Without being particularly consistent or formally training, since then running has become that challenging earned betterment. Now in the 2nd year of my clinical psych PhD, I'm stepping up and taking part in the Sydney Marathon 2016, facing 42.195km. I'm underprepared, but feel like that's all the more suitable. I know this still is not a challenge comparable to what those who experience mental illness can face. So, I would like to use the opportunity to truly make this an experience of commitment to mental wellbeing by raising money for The Black Dog Institute. If you choose to donate I promise to earn your generosity.

There's no running from mental illness, so I'm running for mental health.

Cheers, Jesse

    Black Dog Institute

One in five Australians are affected by mental illness each year.

Mental illness can be overwhelming, crippling and isolating.

The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit organisation and world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder and suicide.
We are the only mental health facility in Australia that combines clinical services, high quality translational research and education programs. We work to empower communities and help the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The Black Dog Institute has 4 important goals:
to diagnose mental illness accurately and early,
treat them using innovative, effective and accessible strategies,
prevent their onset by understanding why and who they affect
to reduce the overall impact of mental illness and save lives.

Black Dog Institute’s vision is for a mentally healthier world.
A world where the onset of depression and suicide can be prevented and treated. With your help we can make this vision a reality.
